Viki Berg is an artist from Kharkiv in Ukraine who has been living in Berlin since the Russian invasion and works there using textile techniques such as tufting. In her artistic practice, she combines Ukrainian folk art, particularly the ornamental painting style known as ‘Petrykivka’, with contemporary questions regarding nature, perception and the understanding of beauty. The starting point for her work was a series of flowers in a primitive style, which over time developed into a critical examination of socially conditioned notions of beauty and their opposites. Her works combine organic forms with unsettling elements, opening up a space in which psychological and emotional aspects of human experience are reflected. In the exhibition “Fäden des Seins” – “Threads of Being”, she presents textile works that explore nature, society and art as interconnected themes. She draws her inspiration primarily from nature as a complex, harmonious system.
